When do you think kids are old enough to be dropped off at the mall alone or with a friend? My daughter is already asking and I've told her noway, nohow. But, it did make me start thinking about the most appropriate time for starting such a thing.

Great question!

As a mom, you know your child best.  There is no magic number.  However, I think that waiting until they can practically drive themselves is a bit stifling.  So, don't wait until they're 16 or 17.

I've seen kids getting into some trouble when they're too young.  We worry about everything from them getting lost to them being poorly influenced to being kidnapped (or worse).  As long as you know your child's temperament, wisdom, interests, and street smarts will serve them well, I say you let them go.  And make sure they exercise safety (know the area, know the rent-a-cop location, go in a group, take a cell phone, etc).

Keep them home if they're rebellious, foolish, disinterested, slick, and generally unobservant.  Also consider if you owned the shop, would you see that child as a customer or a liability?

Definitely some good thoughts that make good sense. If the child is doing well overall, it can be a good test of trustworthiness. But, if the child is particularly naive, I'd be very careful!

I think once they are in Junior High they are ready for a little more independence.  However, since my son is almost there I am getting very nervous.  I hate having him out of my sight and I can't even imagine what I will do when my daughter is older.

I hate it when parents treat places like malls, libraries, and the pool as babysitters when that is not their purpose.  I think you need to be at the mall with your kid even if you dont stay with them.  Let them do their shopping with their friends and you do yours.
