Why is it that hurricaines form over warm water and not cold water? It seems like the science would be the same either way.

Hurricanes form over warm water b/c hurricanes need heat and humidity in order to get power. The more humidity and therefore moisture, the better.

Basically what she said.  TOrnados are formed over water and they dont gain as much energy as hurricanes or size becuase the land limits them.  Some of them do get really big though and those are scary.
